With the traditional Apple posts of massive profits, many people were surprised to see Nokia hit back with some equally astonishing figures of their own. Nokia announced that they have sold 1.5 billion handsets which feature the S40 (Series 40) operating system.
Nokia have changed their fortunes drastically with the more developed version of the S40, which they now say has developed so much that the software should now be called “Software Lite”. In addition, most if not all of their new phones should incorporate it.
Nokia totally believes that the S40 has a bright future and will keep incorporating it into their designs. This has caused some people to question whether Nokia are moving with the times but Mary McDowell, Executive VP for Mobile Phones at Nokia said:”The S40 is a scale business with relatively low research and development costs, so even through the unit price is low, and the profits are still good.”
The main reason the S40 is becoming more popular has been the recent additions made to the devices such as; Nokia Maps, What’s App and the Lite version of Angry Birds (all top apps their own right), which come together in increase the S40s popularity.
Nokia have said that for the future they are focusing “connecting the next billion” or bringing the next lot of customers to them but again this all centres around the continuing development of the S40. Mary McDowell added “it is gratifying to consider how Series 40 devices have made mobile technology accessible and help continue to change people's lives for the better."
